Our History

In late 2009, Steve Malla, Wellness Coordinator at St. Petersburg College was searching for similar-focused wellness professionals in the Tampa Bay area to share ideas in programming, resources, and education. The unsuccessful search of an organized group led his efforts to organize a networking and resource sharing meeting.

The first informal meeting of professionals was held in February 2010. Over 20 corporate wellness, public health, and private health care professionals attended the opportunity to network, brainstorm, and educate themselves to further their expertise. The very successful first meeting led to continued quarterly meetings and an original name of the Bay Area Wellness Coordinators Networking Group (BAWC).

Through the development of the BAWC, another very similar group of wellness professionals were discovered meeting just south of the Skyway Bridge in Manatee/Sarasota region. This group, now called the Wellness Council of Tampa Bay South, decided to join our efforts to enhance the opportunities for Tampa Bay area wellness professionals. The partnership was furthered by the Inaugural Annual Meeting in December 2010 that was promoted to both groups in an effort connect wellness professionals from each region of the Tampa Bay area.

The steady momentum of a growing membership, continued quarterly meetings, and highly attended Annual Meetings led to an official 15-person Steering Committee to be appointed in October 2011. The Steering Committee agreed on the new organizational name, Wellness Council of Tampa Bay, appointed cabinet members and currently meet bi-monthly to plan meetings, events, resource sharing, and administrative business.
